Orderly books of John Lacey's command of his brigade of Pennsylvania militia in 1778 and 1780. The first orderly book, complete from the date his took command of the brigade until his day of his resignation, includes the period of the battle of Crooked Billet. It is followed by the orderly book of Lacey's second command and covers the period from Aug. 14 to Sept. 1.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
